Research Assistant II, Innovation Platform

Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Our goal is to drive scalable solutions for better care at critical moments in people’s lives everywhere. Better care means better health outcomes, lower costs, and more actual caring. Critical means solving health systems failures that have major impact, typically touching people by the millions. Ariadne Labs currently has research programs in the areas of childbirth, surgery, palliative care, and primary health care.

At Ariadne Labs, our programs follow a rigorous scientific pathway in which we design a patient care solution, test for feasibility and impact, and then disseminate broadly. To successfully deliver on our work, Ariadne Labs program teams collaborate with specialized centers of expertise (known as “platforms”) that provide expert guidance and support to every project, from design through to testing and spread of our solutions. Our platform teams have experts in the fields of design, informatics, statistics, implementation science, monitoring and evaluation, quality improvement, strategic communications, and program management. Ariadne Labs’ Innovation Platform works with teams and individuals to refine their ideas through human centered design methods to successfully design, test, and spread solutions through precisely identifying the patient outcomes to change, generating solution options, collecting rapid-cycle feedback, and then iterating on solution design and implementation elements. In addition, through its Spark Grant Program, the Innovation Platform awards seed funding to and mentors faculty to carry out research to define systemic problems in patient care and identify options for high-impact, highly-feasible solutions that are ready to proceed to pilot testing.

Under the Assistant Director of Innovation’s supervision, the Research Assistant will support 2-3 projects that tackle big and unsolved problems in healthcare. Working with content experts across the healthcare spectrum, the research assistant will execute background research — literature review, internet research, informational interviews, etc. — draft papers and summaries, conduct basic analysis, and develop tools and project materials. The research assistant will support the team in managing their findings through tracking systems and slide decks. In addition, the Research Assistant will support the Assistant Director with early stage idea development, drafting program materials (such as one pagers and slides), and other activities that support the development and improvement of the Innovation Platform.

The Innovation Platform currently consists of a full time Assistant Director, part-time Director, & part-time Systems Engineer. This role would work across a 2-3 projects and would work with different project managers and principal investigators. This person must be skilled at supporting multiple projects and managing competing priorities. Candidates with experience in early stage projects are strongly encouraged to apply. Demonstrated flexibility, strong organization skills, and clear and logical thinking required. The Innovation platform particularly appreciates creative thinkers and experience with design thinking.
