Senior Qualitative Specialist, Science and Technology Platform

Ariadne Labs is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Our goal is to drive scalable solutions for better care at critical moments in people’s lives everywhere. Better care means better health outcomes, lower costs, and more actual caring. Ariadne Labs currently has research programs in the areas of childbirth, surgery, and palliative care.
The full-time Senior Qualitative Specialist will be a key member of the Science and Technology team at Ariadne Labs. The Senior Qualitative Specialist will be based in Boston and work to accelerate Ariadne Labs’ work to improve healthcare outcomes using innovative effective solutions. The person hired for this position would report to the Director of Science and Technology and work closely with staff and faculty across the Lab.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:    

  • Design qualitative solutions for small, innovative projects as well as for large-scale, mixed-methods projects seeking to develop scalable solutions to complex health system problems.
  • Serve as the lead researcher, with content input from project teams, to drive projects through all stages from study design to analysis. Lead all aspects of qualitative research including study design and tool development including semi-structured interviews and focus group guides and analytic plans.
  • Develop innovative, qualitative research approaches, activities, and methodologies that will result in high-quality, impactful study results – in collaboration with the Science and Technology and Innovation teams.
  • Act as the lead moderator/interviewer in the gathering of insights through qualitative research methods, primarily through focus group moderation and/or in-depth interviews.
  • Analyze research findings and interpret the results to create insightful reports and presentations, and make recommendations on the future direction of research.
  • Lead the writing of methods and results sections for manuscripts, abstracts, program reports, and new grant proposals.
  • Liaise with project teams to determine appropriate staffing resources for qualitative studies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required
  • 7+ years of related experience required
  • Experience with qualitative software packages required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • DrPH or PhD in relevant field is a plus
  • Experience in leading qualitative methods including study design, implementation, analysis, and manuscript development strongly
  • Experience and interest in mentoring junior team members
  • Experience working in a multi-functional, matrixed environment
  • Experience in guiding the development of conceptual frameworks for new projects
  • Experience in implementation science and/or monitoring and evaluation
  • In-depth knowledge of qualitative software packages, such as NVivo, Dedoose, Atlas.ti,
  • Experience developing interview guides and structured surveys
  • Experience conducting semi-structured interviews and focus groups       
  • An understanding of mixed-methods approaches, specifically in public health
  • Excellent collaboration skills and experience working with multidisciplinary teams
