Primary Health Care Performance Initiative
Dr. Atul Gawande Moderates United Nations Event Launching Primary Health Care Initiative
Around the world, more than 400 million people lack access to basic and essential health services that serve as the foundation of strong health systems. Ariadne Labs is part of a new, global initiative to help low- and middle-income countries improve their primary care systems through better performance measurement and knowledge sharing. Primary health care comprises day-to-day prevention, monitoring , treatment and management services aimed at keeping individuals healthy throughout life. Primary care clinicians sit at the front lines of health care, serving as the patient’s first point of contact with the health care system. High performing primary care systems are characterized by accessibility, continuity, coordination and comprehensiveness of care. Effective primary health care also requires community participation and accountability to ensure that the health system is socially acceptable, universally affordable, and scientifically sound.
The Primary Health Care Performance Initiative launched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank Group and World Health Organization, in partnership with Ariadne Labs and Results for Development, will enable countries to monitor, track and share key performance indicators for primary health care. These key stakeholders have come together to establish performance indicators for assessing primary health care in order to improve performance.
The new PHCPI website tracks 25 “Vital Signs,” performance indicators from 135 countries enabling health leaders, policy makers, clinicians and the public to understand how well or poorly their primary health care system is performing. The data will enable leaders to identify the weaknesses and strengths in their health system as the first step to making improvements. A key focus of PHCPI is making visible the invisible systemic faults in primary care that are responsible for poor performance.
Ariadne Labs lead primary health care faculty member Dr. Asaf Bitton, along with executive director Dr. Atul Gawande and a team of Ariadne Labs researchers, have been instrumental in the creation of the conceptual framework, performance indicators, and novel data gathering tools on primary health care performance for this initiative.
