Every day, more than 800 women and birthing people die around the time of childbirth. Thousands more suffer life-threatening and lifelong complications. Poor care experiences worsen these complications, and more than one-third of people giving birth experience disrespect and abuse during childbirth. In addition, more than 7,000 babies die during or soon after birth globally, with 60-80% of those deaths occurring among low birthweight infants.
For more than a decade, Ariadne Labs has been focused on improving the experience of childbirth and the first year of life by engaging communities, improving the provider-patient experience, and developing provider-level initiatives to improve health systems around the world, especially for the most vulnerable.
