TEAMBIRTH RECOGNITION

TeamBirth Recognition celebrates the work of staff and leaders at sites who have successfully implemented TeamBirth, and are committed to ongoing efforts of sustainability of the TeamBirth care process.

This Recognition program aims to honor hospital sites that center patient autonomy and dignity throughout the birthing process with a sustained TeamBirth practice.

Recognition is achieved when a site:

1.

Observes TeamBirth huddles and submits documentation of the key behaviors

2.

Demonstrates ongoing commitment to TeamBirth through an engagement activity

3.

Attests to the implementation and sustainability components of TeamBirth

We strongly recommend that sites wait at least 9 months after first launching TeamBirth on their units before submitting for Recognition.

Recognized sites receive TeamBirth branding content to showcase their status and their name will be shared on the TeamBirth website. Recognition lasts for 3 years, with the final year dedicated to renewal.

See the TeamBirth Recognized sites in your state or region.

Ready To Get Recognized?

For sites interested in Recognition follow these steps:

APPOINT A TEAMBIRTH LIAISON WHO:

  • Was a member of the implementation team (if possible)
  • Is the primary contact with TeamBirth
  • Will download and share Recognition resources with relevant people
  • Will coordinate completion of the components

COLLABORATE TO COMPLETE EACH RECOGNITION COMPONENT

The TeamBirth Liaison will complete some of the below components while also gathering input and ensuring completion and documentation from a range of roles at the sites.

1.

Recognition Attestation:

A form that collects specific site information about implementation processes, sustainability, and metrics for TeamBirth. This form is submitted once all the following components are complete, and it requires input from at least 3 additional people (with clinical background and/or an organizational leadership roles).

2.

Huddle Observations:

Huddle observations are done to document demonstration of the key TeamBirth behaviors.

  • The Primary Liaison will calculate 10% of the monthly birth volume to determine the number of observations needed for Recognition (see example below). Your goal should be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 35 observations.
  • The Primary Liaison will assign a minimum of 3 different different people to be “Observers”.
    • Make a plan for a variety of roles to observe and document your huddles.
    • Recommended observer roles can include: role-based champions (nurses, OBs, midwives, etc), doulas, social workers, and even patient support people.
  • Observers will observe patient huddles and may self-evaluate huddles where they are a participant (up to 3 times).
  • Observers will document the observations using the Huddle Observation Form (If observers use the paper form, the Liaison should collect them all and input them into the digital form).
  • The Primary Liaison will track completion of observations until reaching the appropriate number of huddles (see example below)

Example Huddle Observation Process

  1. Calculate 10% of the monthly birth volume to determine the number of observations needed for Recognition. Your goal should be a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 35 observations. For example:
    • Annual birth volume = 3,000
    • Monthly birth volume = 3,000/12 = 250
    • 10% of 250 = 0.1 x 250 = 25 huddles
  2. Assign a minimum of 3 different people to be “Observers”. For example:
    • Two nurse managers will observe Huddles on day and night shift until reaching 15 huddles
    • The Champion OB and Champion Midwife will each self-observe 3 huddles
    • Nursing staff will identify and ask support people like doulas to fill out the observation form after being apart of a huddle (With a goal of getting 4 completed forms)

The Primary Liaison coordinates this plan, communicating roles and timeline expectations, while tracking huddle form completion until the 25 huddles are collected for Recognition.

3.

Engagement Activity:

Demonstrate dedication to and engagement with TeamBirth beyond standard implementation. Showcase your activities in one or more of the following activities.

Types of Engagement Activities Include:

  • Examples include: Research project that evaluates TeamBirth impact; Internal patient surveying on TeamBirth experience data collection and analysis; EHR fields integrated to document &/or track TeamBirth Huddles; Huddle chart audits; TeamBirth experience interviews or focus groups with patients &/or clinicians
EXPAND IMPLEMENTATION

Launch an adapted form of TeamBirth in additional settings than the original implementation launch

  • During review (may take several months) the Liaison may receive follow up communications about clarifications or next steps for the submission.
  • An Attestation Report and Observations Summary Report will be provided which include highlights of site strengths and opportunities for improvement or growth.
