Primary health care is the foundation of resilient, responsive global health systems around the globe. Primary health care focuses on treating the whole patient throughout all stages of life, whether in a clinical setting, an outpatient center or another form of ambulatory care. Ariadne Labs’ Ambulatory and Primary Health Care team takes an expansive outlook on ways in which primary health care issues are examined and how solutions are devised and promulgated. We take a multi-faceted approach, looking at both urban and rural settings and cutting-edge technologies as well as basic guidelines. Our tools and innovations target the strengthening and improvement of primary care in multiple contexts to ensure that a continuum of care begins at birth and continues to the final stages of life. Our tools include the Vital Signs Profile which helps low- and middle-income countries assess their primary health care at a granular level and find ways to fill gaps in coverage.
Our Better Evidence program puts the latest medical knowledge at the fingertips of practitioners in low- and middle-income countries through access to top-level digital databases, thus allowing them to make more accurate diagnoses and offer better treatment. To address gaps in medical coverage in the rural United States, we are developing and testing a home hospital model that would bring much-needed care to isolated areas. The promise and potential of precision medicine – treatment extrapolated from an individual’s genome – is being brought to primary care through the Precision Population Health initiative, which was first developed through Ariadne’s Spark Grant program. All these initiatives reflect how primary health care is the backbone of the health care system.
