The FSP+ aims to support and counsel on lactation, mother’s own milk feeding, Kangaroo Mother Care, and hygiene for small vulnerable newborns and their mothers.
The Facility-Based Feeding Support Package Plus (FSP+) is a co-designed, standardized training curriculum and implementation support for healthcare workers to provide support and counseling on lactation, mother’s own milk (MOM) feeding, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), and safe hygiene practices for small vulnerable newborns (SVNs) and their mothers.
The FSP+ provides a health-systems solution that complements existing SVN care. It is designed for the healthcare practitioners responsible for caring for small vulnerable newborns, their mothers, and their families from birth to discharge — built with low-resource settings in mind while remaining applicable across diverse care contexts. Leveraged in health facilities, the FSP+ can improve SVN survival, growth, morbidity, and neurodevelopment at scale.
Grounded in Evidence
Evidence from the LIFT-UP study shows that implementing the FSP+ can lead to earlier, more, and better lactation, MOM feeding, KMC, and safer hygiene practices for small vulnerable newborns — which together improve infant growth and mothers’ experience of care.
The FSP+ Care Model
The FSP+ Care Model guides the delivery of six types of counseling and “hands-on” support sessions, each with clearly defined timing, location, and content aligned to key milestones from birth to discharge.
The FSP+ Components of Adoption
Successful, sustainable adoption follows six core components. Together they ensure facility staff are prepared and able to deliver high-quality care and to keep improving it over time.
Implementation is a journey, not a single event. The full, step-by-step guidance with every linked resource lives in the FSP+ Implementation Guide.
