What is a CANDOR program?

Communication and Optimal Resolution (CANDOR) is another name for a Communication and Resolution Program (CRP). In fact, CRPs go by many names and each organization may have a unique name for their program. Whatever they are called, they all ensure that patients, families, and providers are supported after harm events; that communication is transparent and respectful; that organizations learn from events and improve patient safety as a result; and that when it’s appropriate, financial and non-financial compensation is offered.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed a CANDOR toolkit to assist organizations in the implementation of CRPs. That toolkit can be accessed here. While this toolkit can be a great starting point to understand all of the elements of a CRP, implementation is more successful with support from learning communities such as the Pathway to Accountability, Compassion, and Transparency (PACT) Collaborative
