Ariadne Labs’ Home Hospital team was on the ground in North Carolina this month as Atrium Health showcased a prototype of a new mobile hospital hub designed to bring hospital-level care directly to rural communities. The milestone was featured by WSOC-TV, which highlighted the urgent need for faster, closer access to care in underserved areas.
The mobile medical units will deliver hospital-level services as part of a five-year pilot program aimed at expanding access in rural communities. Funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), the initiative—called DEMOCRATIZE (Driving Equitable Medical Care in Rural America Through Innovative VehiclZE)—combines Ariadne Labs’ expertise in home hospital care, mobile technology, and human-centered design with Atrium Health’s clinical leadership and expertise in home hospital and mobile health.
These specialized electric vehicles will function as clinical hubs to deliver cancer care to rural patients and expand the catchment area of Atrium Health’s home hospital program. The all electric units will operate up to 100 miles from a hospital base. Equipped with imaging, labs, pharmacy access, and telehealth connectivity, they extend advanced acute and oncology care into communities. Bringing cancer care closer to home not only improves convenience, but can also improve outcomes by ensuring timely, continuous care. Planned Systems International (PSI) designed and built the mobile hospital prototype that was present at the event.
Members of the Ariadne Labs Home Hospital team partnered closely with Atrium Health clinicians during the launch, demonstrating clinical workflows, technology integration, and patient-centered care pathways. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to reimagining how and where care is delivered—so that geography no longer determines access to high-quality treatment. As the team at Atrium always says, “We bring the best of what we are, wherever you are.”
“This initiative expands what home hospital can mean for rural America,” said David Levine, MD, MPH, MA Director of the Home Hospital Program at Ariadne Labs. “By extending advanced diagnostics, oncology services, and clinical oversight up to 100 miles from a hospital base, we’re building a scalable model that strengthens rural health systems while improving patient access and outcomes. We’re deeply grateful to our partners at Atrium Health and PSI for their collaboration and ingenuity in bringing this prototype to life.”
As the WSOC coverage makes clear, this effort is more than a new vehicle or pilot. It is a step toward a future in which hospital-level care can meet patients where they live—reducing delays, strengthening rural health systems, and potentially saving lives.
