Susan Haas
Susan Haas, MD, MSc, is a member of the Core Faculty in the Safe Surgery Safe Systems Program and Project Lead for Physician Onboarding Research. Her work at Ariadne has focused on reducing risks to patient safety which result from health system expansion. A recent focus has been on improvements in physician onboarding to new hospitals or new roles, such as during redeployment for Covid-19 care. She led development of new tools to aid leaders and front-line clinicians focus on the most critical needs of system integration. She is currently leading research on optimizing essential health care services in rural communities.
An obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Haas brings long experience in health system affiliation from her time as chief of Ob/Gyn at Atrius Health and CMO of Boston Medical Center. Dr. Haas’ nonclinical work has focused on physician leadership, quality improvement, patient safety, practice variation, and systems engineering in healthcare.
When not at Ariadne Labs, she serves as Medical Subject Matter Expert for the Open Health Solutions division at MITRE Corp.

This report details findings from a joint research initiative developed by Ariadne Labs and the Schmidt Institute in Bangor, Maine with funding provided by the Maine Health Access Foundation. The research team conducted 46 interviews with frontline medical, dental, nursing, EMS, behavioral health, long term care, tribal health, patient and community groups in Washington County, Maine. Researchers aimed to identify systemic constraints that affected Washington County residents’ ability to access and use health and social services and to understand what factors would have the most impact in removing barriers.
